Mitochondrial morphology and length change during fission and fusion and mitochondrial movement varies dependent upon the cell type and the physiological conditions. Here, we describe fundamental wide-field fluorescence microcopy and 3D imaging techniques to assess mitochondrial shape, number and length in various cell types including cancer cell lines, motor neurons and astrocytes. Furthermore, we illustrate how to assess mitochondrial fission and fusion events by 3D time-lapse imaging and to calculate mitochondrial length and numbers as a function of time. These imaging methods provide useful tools to investigate mitochondrial dynamics in health, aging and disease. The central role of mitochondria in cellular energy production has long been appreciated, but new research highlighting the dynamic nature of mitochondria has begun to clarify the importance of these organelles in health and disease. Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that migrate and undergo regular cycles of fission and fusion. Mitochondrial fission and fusion facilitates mixing of metabolites and mitochondrial DNA mtDNA and helps ensure bioenergetic functionality [ 1 , 2 ]. Fission and fusion events also allow proliferation and distribution of mitochondria throughout long neuronal processes, which can extend up to one meter in motor neurons [ 3 , 4 ]. Proper distribution and efficient functioning of mitochondria is particularly important in neurons, which relay heavily on mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation to meet their high energy needs [ 2 ].

Regulation of sodium flux across the cell membrane plays a vital role in the generation of action potentials and regulation of membrane excitability in cells such as cardiomyocytes and neurons.
Our nanosensors are fabricated in two forms: nanoparticles with high brightness and fast response, and nanofibers with potential increased stability in vivo. There are diverse applications, such as medical diagnosis, virology, food security, environmental monitoring, or homeland security, where optochemical sensors can play a relevant role.
The possible role of environmental change, especially sea level change, as a stimulus for the development of human residence and migration is poorly understood. We investigate this problem by showing a record of sea-level change and coastal transformation based on a sediment core FN1 core and a Neolithic site Pingfengshan site obtained from the Funing bay on the northeast coast of Fujian, China. Samples from FN1 core and Pingfengshan site were taken for grain size ananlyses and for optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating.

However, this is not yet true in cities, where the cost of land for the installation of ground photovoltaic PV is prohibitively high and the rooftop space is too scarce to accommodate the PV modules necessary for sustaining the electrical requirements of tall buildings. After 40 years of research, recent breakthroughs in the realization of reabsorption-free emitters with broadband absorption have boosted the performance of LSCs to such a degree that they might be commercialized in the near future.
In this Perspective, we explore the successful strategies that have allowed this change of pace, examining and comparing the different types of chromophores and waveguide materials, and discuss the issues that remain to be investigated for further progress. Knowledge of the age of fluvial deposits is an important aspect in the understanding of river dynamics, which is pre-requisite for sustainable river management and restoration back to more natural conditions and processes. Presented here is a case study on using feldspar Infrared Stimulated Luminescence IRSL to date low-energy fluvial sediments that formed after correction of the Upper Rhine River in the first half of the 19 th century.
A rigorous testing programme is carried out to characterise the IRSL properties of the samples, including thermal transfer, dose recovery and fading. All samples reveal complex distributions of equivalent dose, implying the presence of differential bleach-ing in the samples. It is shown that multi-grain aliquots overestimate the known-age by up-to years, i.

The paper presents the chronology of the Holocene evolution of the Baltic Sea based on the optically stimulated luminescence OSL and radiocarbon dating methods applied to a core taken from the Arkona Basin. The dating results were supplemented by grain size and geochemical analysis. The obtained results of OSL and radiocarbon dating enabled the construction of an age-depth model and confirmed the continuous sedimentation since cal yrs BP.
One of the most interesting findings of this study is a clear relationship between the rate of sedimentation and fluctuations in the energy of depositional environment. The analyzed sediment core revealed two sections of different accumulation rates.

Nyos maar is located in the Cameroon Volcanic Line and generates a multitude of primary and secondary hazards to the local population. For risk assessment and hazard mitigation, the age of the Nyos maar eruption provides some vital information. Since previous dating efforts using a range of techniques resulted in vastly varying eruption ages, we applied thermoluminescence TL methods to obtain independent and direct chronological constraints for the time of maar formation.
Target minerals were granitic quartz clasts contained in pyroclastic surge deposits. Parallel application of three TL measurement protocols to one of the two samples gave consistent equivalent doses for the quartz ultra-violet emission. Despite the robustness of our dose estimates, the assessment of the dose rate was accompanied by methodological challenges, such as estimation of the original size distribution of quartz grains in the pyroclastic deposits.
Considering results from additional laboratory analyses to constrain these uncertainties, we calculate an average maximum TL age of Based on these new data, a more solid risk assessment can be envisaged. Dating of volcanic eruptions in active volcanic environments is of extreme importance in the understanding of possible eruption cycles, geomorphological evolution of volcanogenic landforms and mitigation of natural hazards [ 1 , 2 ]. Classical dating methods for volcanogenic material are based on the decay of radioactive isotopes e.
Further methodological complications comprise the presence of excess argon or the absence of suitable K-rich phenocrysts in the material produced by the eruption.
