Speed Dating Discussion

Teaching research methodology to our new PhD fellows is my favourite class. Doing so in small groups, as is often the case in our PhD programmes and professional training, allows me to engage in creative and innovative educational formats. Every time I teach, I try a new set-up or tweak things a little. But of course, some formats have proven their value over time, so they become permanent fixtures every year. In an interactive classroom setting, we invite our PhDs to pitch their research idea to a few staff members in minute 1-on-1 meetings. For staff members, the game is different. They have no choice — they simply talk to whomever sits opposite of them — but students can form strategies to ensure they meet their ideal set of professors. Experience tells us that both staff and students enjoy the exercise.

The Big List of Class Discussion Strategies

When I explain speed learning to the students, it is inevitable that one of them will say… is this like the learning version of speed dating, and the answer is, Yes! One of the issues that I try to address in the classroom is to have each student talking with the other students about their academic work. If you have students in groups, some will dominate and some will play wall flower.

With speed learning, students are challenged to have several one on one conversations with the other students. I communicate a defined outcome as well as a time limit to help focus the discussions. While it is a loud activity with a ton of movement, I consider those all bonus moments for a dynamic learning environment.

Guest blog by Mrs. Across the country and throughout our great state, classrooms are transforming in an effort to engage students in meaningful learning. Teachers are revamping their teaching styles and lessons to reach students in a way that is fun and memorable. As a secondary social studies teacher, I had to become extra creative in order to find ways to make learning historical content and skills fun and exciting. I knew lectures and workbooks would keep the learner in a sedated state.

So how could I bring learning to life and get students to learn without even realizing it? In this blog, I will share out my speed dating activity and how I used in my 11th grade social studies classroom. Speed Dating The great thing about this activity is that it allows your students to explore a large amount of content in a 45 or minute class period and can be used in any subject area.

Students work individually, in pairs, and then collaboratively. Initially, I thought I was a genius but after researching, I realized it was not some new, unheard of idea.

Each round lasted approximately 13 minutes and focused on one specific category of the writing rubric.

I give the student pairs three to five minutes to read the work of their peers. Then they have five minutes to give critical feedback. Like some people only see grammar mistakes, some people only see spelling mistakes and there are some people who look for like the deep down things like you need more quotes or you need more information. This is what speed dating really allows them to practice. I want them to know that professional journalists actually revise. They re-interview, the make mistakes, they ask their colleagues to take a look at their work and they go back and they do it all over again in order to make it sparkle.

The panel discussion is a valuable, time-tested teaching technique used in classrooms of all types to help students understand the experiences.

At the start of a speed dating session, students are given a topic or question to discuss. Each student sits facing another student. Students typically remain in their partner-groups for about minutes before the instructor, who must keep time, notifies them to move on to their next partner. Once students rotate to their new partners, the timer is reset and students again discuss their topic or question, this time with a new discussion partner.

The session proceeds in this manner, with each student thus getting the opportunity to interact with multiple other students in a series of brief one-on-one discussions Murphy, Depending on the goals of the session, the instructor may prepare just a few broad questions for students to discuss Murphy, Rather than preparing the answer sheets themselves, instructors can assign their preparation as a homework or in-class activity, as creating the answer sheets serves as another opportunity for students to learn the material Danczak, Another pre-session preparatory activity is to provide students with time to write on the topic to organize their ideas before they begin to converse with their peers Murphy, In other variations, students may be required to take a stand on a topic, or they may be asked to incorporate points made by other students into their position as the session goes along Murphy,

my teaching strategies helped me to construct an activity that provides students direct practice in these expectations. The activity, “Speed Dating with Theorist”.

This is the first in a series of three posts about activities I usually do on the first days of class. The main objective is to get students speaking and assess their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, as well as giving them an idea of what is expected of them for the rest of the year. Single men and women attend an event, usually in a bar or a club.

During the event, they will have the opportunity to meet a series of potential partners. As the term speed-dating suggests, they only have three minutes to impress each person before rotating to the next. In the classroom we do the same but eliminate the romantic part! So basically they have three minutes or any other time limit you wish to establish to speak to one person before moving on to the next.

This technique works wonders on the first day as it breaks the ice just perfectly. Once again we selected the more general questions which we believed were more suitable for our classes. A great success! The only drawback to the activity is the noise level; so to draw their attention to when the three minutes are up, you need a loud voice or an alarm!

Using a Speed Dating Protocol to Think Critically about Writing

Weinberg and Moussawi collaborated with the other faculty members teaching the capstone Information Systems project course to explore how students could give and receive higher quality peer feedback on team presentations. They compared two different presentation approaches. Next, teams changed pairings, and the process repeated. Students completed brief surveys after each project-sharing session, and a sampling of sessions was observed by a trained researcher.

According to the surveys, students reported giving and receiving more helpful feedback during the speed dating sessions compared to sessions with serial, class-wide presentations. Students also reported being significantly more engaged during the speed dating sessions.

Pair work is a much-loved, much-used teaching technique—and with good Speed conversations—Anyone who knows anything about speed dating can.

It involves getting together 10 or more men and women and providing them with an opportunity to talk to each other, one-on-one, for five minutes each. I modified this dating technique to make classroom presentations provide more practice with oral language while making them less threatening for students. Procedure What you do is you have students prepare a five-minute oral presentation, based on a topic of your choice.

I call these “Speed Demos” with my students. Next, they present it five times to five different people in the class. They conduct their five-minute oral presentation, and then they listen to their partner present for five minutes. After that, they rotate to another person. I like to set up a list with names along with partners so that everyone knows whom they will be presenting for, but you may prefer to have them rotate on their own — especially if you can set up the classroom with desks in an outer circle and an inner circle to facilitate rotations.
