Teaching research methodology to our new PhD fellows is my favourite class. Doing so in small groups, as is often the case in our PhD programmes and professional training, allows me to engage in creative and innovative educational formats. Every time I teach, I try a new set-up or tweak things a little. But of course, some formats have proven their value over time, so they become permanent fixtures every year. In an interactive classroom setting, we invite our PhDs to pitch their research idea to a few staff members in minute 1-on-1 meetings. For staff members, the game is different. They have no choice — they simply talk to whomever sits opposite of them — but students can form strategies to ensure they meet their ideal set of professors. Experience tells us that both staff and students enjoy the exercise.

When I explain speed learning to the students, it is inevitable that one of them will say… is this like the learning version of speed dating, and the answer is, Yes! One of the issues that I try to address in the classroom is to have each student talking with the other students about their academic work. If you have students in groups, some will dominate and some will play wall flower.
With speed learning, students are challenged to have several one on one conversations with the other students. I communicate a defined outcome as well as a time limit to help focus the discussions. While it is a loud activity with a ton of movement, I consider those all bonus moments for a dynamic learning environment.

This technique works wonders on the first day as it breaks the ice just perfectly. Once again we selected the more general questions which we believed were more suitable for our classes. Using a Speed Dating Protocol to Think Critically about Writing
Weinberg and Moussawi collaborated with the other faculty members teaching the capstone Information Systems project course to explore how students could give and receive higher quality peer feedback on team presentations. They compared two different presentation approaches. Next, teams changed pairings, and the process repeated. Students completed brief surveys after each project-sharing session, and a sampling of sessions was observed by a trained researcher.
According to the surveys, students reported giving and receiving more helpful feedback during the speed dating sessions compared to sessions with serial, class-wide presentations. Students also reported being significantly more engaged during the speed dating sessions.

It involves getting together 10 or more men and women and providing them with an opportunity to talk to each other, one-on-one, for five minutes each. I modified this dating technique to make classroom presentations provide more practice with oral language while making them less threatening for students.
